A Statement on Tariffs and Art

At Square Foot Show, we believe in art’s power to connect people across borders. After all, we’re a company owned and run by a partnership of Canadian and American friends. The trade situation between our two countries has complicated cross-border sales, and we won’t pretend otherwise. As of August 22, 2026, the U.S. regime implemented a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods, including original paintings. Canada has rightly announced its own countermeasures in response. This fight runs straight through our own table, so believe us when we say we did not choose this, and none of it is the fault of the artists we work hard to support.

We do not believe artists should absorb these tariffs, so we don’t add them to your checkout. In an effort to bring clarity to the purchasing experience, every painting shows the artist’s country of origin.

If you see a painting you can’t live without (trust us, we understand!) and your order crosses the Canada-U.S. border, the tariff is your responsibility as a collector. You’ll be billed one of two ways depending on the order. Either the carrier collects the additional fees at delivery, or the artist invoices you in advance, to be prepaid before the piece ships.

Many of you want to support artists wherever they work. So do we, and we’re glad to help. Others are buying closer to home right now, and we completely understand and support that choice. Both are welcome here.
